A DIY tip from a Marlin reader on making a tower scratch guard

To protect your tower legs from getting scratched while raising and lowering your outriggers for maintenance, cover the outside of the pipe with one of those blue water-pump discharge hoses.

Cut off a piece of hose long enough to go from the hardtop down to the base of the tower leg, and then secure it every couple of feet with tape or wire ties. Depending on the diameter of your pipe, you can leave the hose as is — so you have double layers of hose when it’s pushed flat against the pipe — or split the hose down its length so you can wrap it around a larger-diameter pipe.
