2013 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament
CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO — The 15th annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is set to take place on October 15 to 19, 2013. Teams wanting to fish can still sign up during the final registration and kickoff party starting Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. on the beachside terrace of the Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa. The Captains and Anglers rules meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. All of the information can be found on the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Web Site (www.LosCabosBillfishTournament.com). Participating teams will hit the water Wednesday, October 16, in hopes of earning some of the estimated $750,000* in cash and prizes by releasing the most billfish or catching the largest marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado during the tournament’s three days of fishing. Weigh-ins will take place at the weigh gantry next to the boat ramp at the IGY Cabo San Lucas Marina, and teams’ release video check-ins will occur at the IGY Marina office. After each day of fishing, anglers will enjoy complimentary beer courtesy of the Baja Brewing Company.
Following the tournament Saturday night, anglers and guests will enjoy a surf-and-turf dinner gala at the Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa’s beachside terrace. Tournament winners will be honored and receive cash and prizes from generous sponsors including Furuno marine electronics, artist Rick Bogert, Fin-Nor tackle, trophies by King Sailfish Mounts, Berkley fishing line, IGY Marina, AFTCO, Airmar, Costa, Puerto Los Cabos, Playa Grande, PENN reels, Geoffrey Smith sculptures, Accurate Reels, Wiley X, IWS Scales, Hi-5 Big Game Lures, Marlin Magazine, Transcabo, Cabo Cigar Company, and Baja Brewing Company.
The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament began in 1999 and quickly became known as the class event in Cabo. With its participant-focused, environmentally friendly format, the tournament provides the best angler amenities, payback of entry fees, and enforces the use of non-offset circle hooks when live-bait fishing, which ensures the best survival rate of the released fish. The LCBT was also the first tournament in Cabo to use cameras and technology to score billfish releases, leading to large cash purses for letting billfish go. The tournament was the first to introduce a live online scorekeeper in Cabo, allowing participants and fans from all over the world to access what happens on the water and at the weigh scales. Now in its 15th year, the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament continues to be a team effort between the Los Cabos Tourism Board, the crew at Marlin and Sport Fishing magazines and the many great sponsors that make the tournament special.
