Ah, our love-hate relationship with the sun. Whether too much or not enough, either can harm you. But one thing is certain: If you chase billfish with any regularity, there’s no avoiding it. The fish we pursue most frequently live in the tropical, sun-filled locales most people only dream of visiting. Thankfully, we’re far from defenseless against our solar aggressor. The big brains of our industry have spent decades outfitting offshore adventurers with smarter, tougher, more technical gear built for warm-weather extremes. From sun protection and cooling performance to hydration and functionality, here’s a look at some of the latest products leading the fight against heat and sun exposure while offshore.
Huk Rogue Island Flip-Flop
Believe it or not, since Huk launched in 2014, the highly popular brand had not released a flip-flop until now. The Rogue Island brings on-the-water traction into an everyday package, built around Grip-X technology for slick decks, wet docks and an amphibious lifestyle. A sturdy footbed, durable toe post and comfort-stretch strap keep things easy for all-day wear, while the outsole adds real stability underfoot. Overall, it’s a well-done warm-weather essential with obvious purpose behind its build.
Costa Grand Catalina
Built around Costa’s heritage aviator shape, the Grand Catalina shades are made for high-sun days when any break from glare is worth taking. Removable side shields add coverage when light is hard off the water, while vented nose pads and sweat-management channels help prevent fogging in hot conditions. Functional, performance-driven and heartily built, they’re ready for long runs, cockpit duty and dockside drinks.
Simms Men’s Superlight Pants
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: Don’t sleep on the fly-fishing apparel. The Simms Men’s Superlight pant is a smart answer for anglers who want full-leg coverage without overheating. They’re ultralight, stretchy, quick-drying and moisture-wicking, with UPF 50+ protection. The result is a great warm-weather pant option that’s perfect when dressing up (slightly) for tournament awards ceremonies, travel days, or just exploring the islands.
Pelagic Vaportek in Wahoo Camo
The Pelagic Vaportek is one of several products within the brand’s strong lineup of warm-weather performance gear. Ultralight, quick-drying, vented for airflow, and built with UPF 50+ protection in a four-way stretch fabric, the Vaportek is a favorite among offshore regulars. What’s new is the Wahoo Camo Petrol pattern, which gives this proven offshore layer a fresh new look without messing with the formula.
OluKai Kialoa
The Kialoa is built for long, hot days around the water when you need more than a flip-flop but don’t want to be locked into a heavy shoe or boot. The quick-dry mesh upper keeps things light and breathable, while the slip-on design makes it easy to move from the dock to the boat and back again. With a design sharp enough to avoid ridicule in the cockpit and wearable without socks, it pairs all-day ease with a wet-grip rubber outsole for confident traction on slippery surfaces.
KScott Islander Button Down Shirt
Equal parts island shirt and offshore statement piece, KScott’s Offshore Dreamin’ Islander Button Down brings big-fish energy to a polished garment that’s perfect for the docks, the tiki bar or dinner. The lightweight poly-cotton-spandex blend delivers moisture-wicking comfort, quick-dry performance and easy stretch, with smart details like a tagless label and built-in microfiber sunglasses wipe. The artwork gives it the signature KScott edge, drawing from artist K.C. Scott’s deep connection to fishing, marine life and the adventure-driven lifestyle.
Guy Harvey Marlin Air Sun Protection Dress
Guy Harvey’s most recent apparel launch is a far cry from those simple cotton short-sleeved pocket tees of my youth. And that’s a good thing. Guy’s recently launched Marlin Air Sun Protection line uses cooling nylon, breathable mesh paneling and moisture-wicking performance to help anglers stay comfortable when the sun is relentless and the air is thick. The lady’s sundress is shown here, and the line also includes several performance shirt options for men and a face gaiter. As with all Guy Harvey merchandise, a portion of each purchase supports the Guy Harvey Foundation.
AFTCO Swiftwater Shorts
From the originators of the classic fishing shorts, AFTCO’s Swiftwater shorts keep things simple, and that is the point. This lightweight, streamlined option is for anglers who want the essentials done right without being bogged down by extra pockets or bulk. The breathable woven mesh fabric has four-way stretch, dries quickly, and moves easily around the cockpit, dock and marina, or when hopping on a flight back home. Available in four patterns, these clean, comfortable hot-weather shorts are built for fishing, travel and everyday water life.
Bajio Cocho
Bajío’s 2026 collection brings several new angler-focused frames to the lineup, but the Cocho stands out for bluewater duty. This XL frame is built for long, bright days when eye comfort and clean visibility matter. Polarized, blue-light-blocking lenses help cut glare and sharpen contrast, while flex hinges keep the fit easy. The key feature is the fully removable side shields, which let you block out the sun and hopefully avoid the product’s dreaded namesake, sancocho.
Columbia PFG Solar Stream II
Columbia has long been synonymous with warm-weather performance fishing gear, and that legacy continues with its new PFG Solar Stream II long-sleeved shirt (shown) and hoodie. The patented Omni-Shade broad-spectrum UPF 50 sun protection, along with Omni-Freeze and Omni-Wick technology, helps manage heat and moisture, while the crossover hood adds coverage around the neck and face. Lightweight, stretchy and easy to wear all day, it is a strong option for crews chasing fish under a hard tropical sun.
