After receiving the Best in Show award for new boats under 60 feet at the 2024 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last October, I have been interested to see how the new Mag Bay 38 lives up to the fanfare. I recently had the opportunity to review the impressive new center-console during the Miami International Boat Show, and she did not disappoint.
Design and Fishability
With the company being known for producing high-end center-consoles and express sport-fishing boats, the Mag Bay 38 fills the gap between the company’s existing 33- and 43-foot models. Working with renowned architect Steve Matthews, the 38 features a cross-step hull design and a variable deadrise bottom with both transverse and longitudinal steps, delivering a smooth, dry ride in confused sea conditions. This was demonstrated well during our test run in the “washing machine” that is Biscayne Bay during the Miami boat show.

In terms of fishability, she is well equipped for a variety of angling applications. A 75-gallon pressurized transom livewell, ample above- and below-deck storage, and in-deck fish boxes provide the necessary tools for offshore fishing. The open deck layout allows multiple anglers to fish and move freely in the uncluttered cockpit, while optional forward seating provides additional comfort when cruising.
A large T-top with Mag Bay’s signature stainless-steel fabrication provides ample coverage from the elements, while upholstery and a Release Marine seating package bring superior comfort and aesthetics to the console. Our model featured two 22-inch Garmin MFDs, a Garmin electronics package, Empirbus digital switching, and a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer. The console was engineered with the comfort of the crew in mind, with a console step providing additional visibility and make long runs easier. Below deck on the 38 is a small living area equipped with a head, a small sink, a refrigerator, a microwave, air conditioning and a full-size bed.

Power and Performance
Owners have the option of twin or triple outboard configurations; however, the boat we tested had three Mercury 400s, and it performed incredibly. Cruising comfortably at 47 mph, our test boat burned 58 gph, providing a range of more than 400 miles at cruise. Of note is the 38’s fuel capacity. At nearly 600 gallons, she has one of the largest fuel capacities in its class.
Whether as a primary boat or a companion to a larger sport-fisher, the Mag Bay 38 CC offers a well-balanced mix of speed, range, fishability and luxury without unnecessary frills. After its debut in Fort Lauderdale, this model continues to turn heads among dedicated boaters and anglers.
