The Brazil-based team of Eliseu Soares, Rogerio Andrade and Eurico Soares, representing the Torneio de Peixes de Bico 2021 tournament, continued a strong run on Day Two of the Offshore World Championship, fishing out of Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica. They added an additional seven Pacific sailfish releases to their tally from the first day of competition to lead the event with 4829.6 points. Eurico and Eliseu Soares are also the tournament’s fourth- and fifth-place individual anglers, respectively. It’s a strong showing from an experienced team, which has everyone wondering: Can they go wire to wire in the 2022 Championship event? Time will tell.
Hoping to knock the Brazilians off the podium are two teams that have tasted victory in the OWC before. Representing the 2002 Offshore World Champions, John Lloyd, Rudolph Jessey, James Scott Laney, Buddy Moore and Frank Schaaf remained in second place. They released eight sailfish on Day Two for a total score of 4,187.20 points. Schaaf also landed the tournament’s leading dorado, an impressive 58.4-pound bull on Day One.
In third is another familiar team, the 2021 Offshore World Champions: Dell Dembosky, Michael Moretti, Bobby Ogden and Dwight Wolf. With nine more sailfish releases from Day Two, they are within striking distance of the leaders with 4,000 points. Dembosky is currently the top individual angler with 2,200 points, an honor he also won in last year’s event.
This year, the Costa Offshore World Championship is hosting 37 teams and 168 anglers from 18 countries. Two days of fishing remain.
