The 72nd Annual San Juan International Billfish Tournament (IBT), hosted by Club Náutico de San Juan, wrapped up November 9, 2025, with an impressive 107 blue marlin releases over three days of fishing. This year’s tournament marked a bold new chapter for one of the world’s most historic and prestigious billfish events.
For the first time in decades, the IBT shifted its dates to November 4–9, aligning the event with peak marlin migration through the island’s legendary “Blue Marlin Alley.” The change paid off—strong fishing, smooth seas, and spirited international competition underscored the tournament’s continuing evolution.
This year’s edition also ushered in several exciting innovations aimed at enhancing competition and inclusivity. Under the direction of Chairman Richard H. Christiansen, Jr., the 2025 IBT allowed participants fish with their own team throughout the event, and also offered $75,000 in cash and prizes, along with the prestigious trophies. Also, for the first time, the tournament introduced separate Sonar and Non-Sonar divisions, leveling the playing field between traditionally equipped boats and those using the new technology. A new youth category for anglers ages 13 to 17 joined the existing ladies’, boat, and team divisions, encouraging participation from the next generation of anglers. And to further modernize the event, all billfish releases were documented via onboard video verification, reinforcing the tournament’s all-release format and strict IGFA compliance.
Competitors from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the United States, and the British Virgin Islands took part, forming teams or chartering local boats under the four-angler format. The festivities began with the traditional Flag Ceremony, followed by nightly socials and an awards gala to conclude the festivities.
Local standout Sari Victoria claimed top honors in the Non-Sonar Division, racking up an impressive seven blue marlin releases. Owner Tito Saavedra credited the victory to his captain and crew in his speech at the awards ceremony. Release placed second with four billfish releases, followed by Chu-lería in third, also with four releases from multiple anglers.
In the newly introduced Sonar Division, Fresh Air dominated with six blue marlin releases, including three by owner Faustino García. They were followed by Fishing Time in second, with four releases led by standout angler Gabriel Cadenas, and Pícara in third, also with four fish.
Top Angler honors went to AJ Cabrer (four releases), Faustino García (three releases), and Hans Mangual (two releases).
With 62 boats competing and over a hundred billfish released, the 2025 IBT reaffirmed why this storied event remains a cornerstone of the international big-game circuit.
