Randy Llanes Died Suddenly in a Spearfishing Accident in Kona

Randy Llanes, a sport-fishing captain from Kona, Hawaii, died in a tragic spearfishing accident with a swordfish on Friday, May 29th. Members of the sport-fishing community are mourning the loss and pulling together to help support his family by setting up a GoFundMe page titled, “LTW…Llanes That’s Why!”.

According to the story from the West Hawaii Times, “Randy Llanes, 47, had dived into Honokohau Harbor with flippers and a speargun, and speared the fish in the southeast corner of the boat harbor around 10:30 a.m. Friday. The billfish then went into a frenzy, circled and came back around on Llanes, striking him in the chest.”

Llanes was prounounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, despite efforts from responders and emergency crews.

As of noon EST on June 2, 2015, the fundraising page for Randy llanes’ family had raised $16,370 of the $20,000 goal.
