The Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown has become one of the most competitive events found anywhere in fishing. Each season, approximately 50 top-flight teams gather in beautiful Los Sueños, Costa Rica, for a battle royale: three tournaments, from January through March, with hundreds of thousands of dollars (not to mention pride and bragging rights) on the line. Every bite counts, and the difference between winning and losing can come down to just one extra billfish release.
During the first leg in January, 2017, Alexis Chamorro’s Xta-Sea team, fishing aboard Reel Doc, emerged victorious. They also took an early lead in the standings for the overall championship team of the series but with two more tournaments remaining, it’s far too early to call. Last year’s series champions, Capt. Jon Duffie’s Agitator, placed second in the first leg, so they too are in the running for series champions. And while the first leg in January was marked by a phenomenal marlin bite, the fishing for Leg II looks like it’s returned to normal, with plenty of Pacific sailfish found within the 50-mile tournament boundary.
Los Sueños Resort and Marina, located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, is perfectly situated to take advantage of the terrific action just offshore. The resort serves as not just host of the event but a stunningly scenic backdrop for the week’s festivities. Founder and president Bill Royster is more than just a developer, though, he’s also a passionate angler who participates in this event each year.
