Building a Merritt 86

The 86 Merritt more than qualifies as a big sport-fishing platform.

The Merritt family name personifies the growth of the boating industry in South Florida. While many changes have occurred since the boat yard was started in 1948 by Franklin (Roy) and Ennis Merritt — the 37 footers have grown to include yachts up to 86 feet with many luxurious enhancements — the small Mom & Pop ambiance of the boat yard has basically remained the same. The latest launch from Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works is a spectacular 86-footer powered by twin MTU M-94 2,600 hp diesels. Merritt currently has four 86-foot hulls under construction, and has already delivered two. Click through the images to visit behind the scenes in the construction of a Merritt 86.
