Fishermen have been branding each other with nicknames for as long as they’ve been chasing fish. Whether it’s a skill, a personality quirk or a moment of infamy, these monikers stick like salt spray on a bridge enclosure. Some are easy to decipher—The Gaff, Backlash, Froggy, Splitshot, Swab—while others make you wonder about their origins. Our instruction staff at Marlin Expeditions is no exception. Some of their nicknames are obvious, but others require a story. Today, we highlight two of our finest: Stephen “Bo” Jenyns and Tyler “Squid” Morris. These two aren’t just world-class fishermen; they’re world-class friends. The fishing world would feel a massive void without their dedication to this sport and their commitment to the Marlin Expeditions program. I am personally and professionally grateful to them both.

Bo Jenyns
Born into an Aussie fishing family, Bo is a third-generation fisherman. As a kid with a wild curly ’fro and a knack for destruction, he quickly earned his nickname Bozo. By the time he was a teenager, Bozo had been shortened to Bo. At age 16, he was working his first season on the Reef with a legitimate mothership operation and knew he was destined to be a marlin fisherman.
Scott Levin (of The Madam and The Hooker fame) gave Bo his first opportunity to travel overseas. Levin told him that he could fish the world year-round by being a traveling fisherman. When Bo arrived in Kona, Hawaii, at 18, his focus shifted. “I had caught some big blacks in Australia, but now I wanted to fish for big blues in Kona,” he says.
After fishing with Capt. Billy Fairbairn—one of the all-time great wiremen—Bo was inspired to become one of the best. And he’s done just that, working alongside some of the finest boat drivers in the business and armed with the best advice he’d ever heard: “Don’t let go, Bo.”
Fast-forward to 2002. Bo was freelancing on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia when Marlin Expeditions (then known as Marlin University) showed up. “I knew it was going to be a game-changer for the industry,” he says. He saw firsthand how it connected anglers with top-tier operations and made high-level fishing accessible. Clients loved how Marlin Expeditions had everything prebooked and organized so that they could just show up, fish and truly learn—an experience unlike traditional charters.
Now, staring at the second half of his career, Bo is ready to pass on the wisdom he’s gained. “I’ve done a lot of Marlin Expeditions since then,” he says. “Some clients bought boats, some joined the tournament circuit and made some great memories, and others never fished again. But either way, they got the right experience the first time.”
Bo is undeniably devoted to his job and says it takes a lot of heart and soul to live and breathe it. He believes the more people who get into the sport, the better. That’s what he loves about Marlin Expeditions. “It gives anyone a chance to see if they like it—and from my experience, they freaking love it!”
His advice? “Spend as many days on the water as you can. Only fish with good people. And be smart—good fishermen learn from experience.”

Tyler “Squid” Morris
Born and raised in the Florida Keys, Tyler also comes from a fishy family. His father, Capt. Dave Morris, introduced him to charter fishing at Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada at a young age, and he says if it weren’t for his father, he wouldn’t be where he is today. Tyler credits his father for encouraging him to ride along with as many captains as possible, absorb information and ask questions. Tyler’s fishing roots run deep—so deep that his mother landed a 500-pound blue marlin while seven months pregnant with him, cementing a legacy that would shape his life and career.
Tyler’s love for fishing started in elementary school. He was captivated by the fishing boats at Bud N’ Mary’s and the catches they brought in. By age 11, he was fishing tournaments. At 12, his passion took him to the waters of Turks and Caicos, where he fished alongside his good friend Nick Stanczyk.
The two youngsters were obsessed with the movie Captain Ron. Nick began calling Tyler “Swab” after the character Ben Harvey in the film, but eventually, it evolved into Squid. Nick thought Squid sounded way cooler than Swab, so it stuck. Having known him for many years now, I can confirm that the name fits—in all the best ways.
During those formative years in the Caribbean, fishing became more than just a hobby to Squid; it became his calling. Back in Islamorada, he learned from some of the greatest captains in the Keys—Alex Adler, Paul Ross and Scott Stanczyk. Since then, he has traveled the world, fishing in Bermuda, Cape Verde, Australia, St. Thomas and the Bahamas, and along the Atlantic Seaboard.
His motto, “Be fast—they don’t bite all day!”—a saying coined by his father—reflects his high-energy approach to fishing. “One of my greatest joys is teaching others the art of fishing,” Squid says. “There’s a profound satisfaction in helping someone discover the thrill and techniques of this beloved pastime.”
“For me, nothing compares to the rush of backing down on a 1,000-pound marlin—the adrenaline, the anticipation and the power of the fish as the drag peels off a 130 at Mach 10,” he says.
Squid takes great pride in refining the skills of aspiring anglers and emphasizing preparation. “Every detail matters. From crimping lures and making leaders to crafting dredges and keeping the boat pristine, each step is essential for a successful day on the water.”
Whether on the boat or sharing tips with his fellow fishermen, Squid is committed to fostering a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the sport. Through his experiences, he hopes to inspire others to embrace the thrill of fishing and always be prepared for the adventures ahead.
“Being a part of the Marlin Expeditions program is a huge honor,” he says. “Teaching good catch-and-release techniques, focusing on conservation, and helping fishermen connect and learn from one another is an incredible opportunity.”
The Legacy of Bo and Squid
Bo Jenyns and Tyler Morris are two of the best in the business. Their dedication to fishing and sharing their expertise makes them invaluable members of the Marlin Expeditions team. Their nicknames might have started as jokes or childhood quirks, but today, Bo and Squid are synonymous with expertise, passion and the very best of big-game fishing. If you get the chance to fish with them, take it—you won’t regret it. And if you’re lucky, you might walk away with a nickname of your own.
