Boat Review: Kilker & Taylor 50 SF

Designed to be both a convertible and an express, the Kilker & Taylor 50 Sportfish offers its owner the open feel of an express boat with an elevated bridge platform with a full array of electronics.

Designed to be both a convertible and an express, the Kilker & Taylor 50 Sportfish offers its owner the open feel of an express boat with an elevated bridge platform with a full array of electronics. Though the absence of the aft bulkhead in this arrangement is certainly not new, the fore and aft side windows all operate electronically, giving the owner the option of how much “express” he actually wants. In less than ideal conditions, the salon can be fully closed and air-conditioned.

Although the arrangement is a galley-up configuration, the salon is completely top-coated for ease of maintenance inherent in a day boat. A weather-tight door provides access to a three-stateroom, two-head arrangement trimmed in cherry and blond teak. Engine-room access is through the cockpit. A separate air-conditioned pump room is accessible through the salon sole.

The boat is fully cored, and the transom, hull sides and bottom surrounding the cockpit have an outer layer of Kevlar to protect against punctures. The stringers incorporate carbon fiber to increase stiffness and strength. With 800-hp MAN diesels, the boat is expected to cruise comfortably at 32 knots, with a top speed of 36 to 38 knots.
