QUEPOS, Costa Rica (April 26, 2017) — The fleet of 50 international tournament fishing teams in the Lucas Oil Offshore World Championship doubled the event’s overall catch count on Tuesday during day two of the world’s premier saltwater angling championship, logging 49 sailfish and eight blue marlin in the waters off of Quepos, Costa Rica.
Highlighting the day were the release videos showcasing hard-fought battles with the Pacific’s sailfish and blue marlin. Angler Shane Spraznoff from Flagstaff, Ariz., released one big blue after a particularly intense two-hour fight on light tackle, earning the Tropic Star Roosterfish Tournament team 500 points.
While the Mauritius Billfish Release International Tournament was the top team of the day, hauling in three sailfish and one blue marlin for 1,100 points, Team Torneio Marlin do Rio de Janeiro completed the day in first place overall with a total of 1,600 points.
Team Oregon Tuna Classic, Monday’s overall leader, slid into second place after adding a single sailfish for 200 points to their score during day two. Closely following was the team representing the Torneio de Peixes de Bico in third place. Fandango, a 31-foot Gamefisher, was the top boat of the day.
But these 255 anglers from around the world weren’t the only ones to hit the water Tuesday. A small fleet of boats carrying anglers’ guests and tournament partners joined the action during a half-day roosterfish competition. Winners will be announced along with top teams, anglers and boat captains at the awards gala on April 28.
