West Marine had one goal when creating an updated version of their iconic Third Reef foul weather set – to make it even better than it was before. The 3L represents the three layers that make up jacket: a nylon layer with Durable Water Repellant, a waterproof, breathable laminated layer and finally a nylon tricot layer that provides increased breathability, is quick drying and offers a reduction in weight not found in 2 layer jackets. Another significant change is the removal of the inner lining. With no lining the jacket dries quickly and the inner seams are all visible so you can see where the typical weak spots in a foul weather jacket have been reinforced with tape.

An articulated, bright yellow hood moves with you so there is no fear of losing sight when you turn your head side-to-side and the color makes your most vulnerable body part highly visible in any weather condition. Inner Dartex storm cuffs and an external hook-and-loop wrist adjuster effectively keeps water out of the adjustable cuffs. A two-way zipper allows you to unzip from the bottom for easy access to bib pockets.

The bibs feature the same three layers as the jacket with added durability. Nylon reinforcements patches are added to the areas that take more abuse such as the seat, knees and back ankle hem. They also feature a drop seat which allows the back portion to be removed without having to remove the bibs completely. Simply unsnap the side closures and unzip the water-resistant side zippers and fold the seat down. The articulated knees allow for total range of motion and the cuffs feature the external hook-and-look adjusters to keep the ankles tight so water can’t get in.
