Marlin University is now Marlin Expeditions! We travel to the best big-game destinations on Earth, at peak times of the year, and teach the most cutting-edge techniques to catch billfish. Check out our 2026 expeditions.
As I write this from a dimly lit hotel room in Quito, just hours before we head to the Galápagos, it’s hard not to think about evolution. This is, after all, where Charles Darwin first began connecting the dots that would change how we understand the natural world. In a few hours, we’ll be chasing striped marlin and pushing offshore into waters that hint at something bigger. But like any angler staring at a clean spread before the bite, my mind keeps drifting, not just to what’s ahead on the water, but to the evolution of Marlin Expeditions itself.
Historically, the program operated in two separate lanes. On one side was Marlin University—structured, instructional and built on repetition. On the other was Expeditions—premium travel experiences defined by access, destinations and top-tier boats. Both worked. But they existed independently.
Today, those lanes have merged into a single, performance-driven system: a global platform designed to guide anglers through every stage of their big-game journey with purpose and progression.
Marlin Education Series
At the foundation sits the Marlin Education Series—the evolution of Marlin University and the true entry point into the program. These trips are built around high-repetition fisheries and controlled environments where the focus is simple: build skill.
This is where anglers learn the fundamentals that matter: teaser work, switch-baiting, bait rigging, leadering fish and proper release techniques. It’s hands-on, repetition-driven and designed to build confidence quickly. It’s not flashy, and it’s not meant to be. It’s the proving ground that sets everything else in motion.
2026 Education Series Expedition:
Marlin Tournament Series
From there, anglers move into the Tournament Series, where the focus shifts from execution to performance under pressure. Fishing well is one thing. Doing it when every decision counts is another.
These trips introduce strategy, communication and timing at a competitive level. This includes spread management, scoring awareness and defined onboard roles. It’s a controlled but high-intensity environment that sharpens instincts and builds the foundation for serious tournament fishing.
2026 Tournament Series Expeditions:
Marlin Specialized Series
The Specialized Series is where performance meets refinement. Here, anglers begin to focus on specific species or missions in world-class fisheries, dialing in technique, gear and strategy at a higher level.
The emphasis shifts to understanding behavior, testing new methods and equipment, and adapting to location-specific conditions. It’s a premium tier designed not just for results, but for repeatability—where anglers return year after year to refine their approach in pursuit of apex species.
2026 Specialized Series Expeditions:
- Tropic Star Lodge | TBD
- Satellite tagging black marlin with Dr. Guy Harvey
Marlin Adventures
At the top sits Marlin Adventures. These are not your traditional trips. They are remote, exploratory and often unpredictable. Success isn’t guaranteed, and that’s exactly the point.
These expeditions demand more—physically and mentally. Heavy drag, long travel, uncertain conditions and true frontier fishing define the experience. They are built around discovery, where the story often matters as much as the catch.
One System, Clear Progression
What ties all four tiers together is progression. Evolution. This is no longer a collection of disconnected trips, it’s a structured pathway. Anglers can move through the program with clarity, building skills, gaining experience and ultimately pushing into new levels of the sport.
It also brings alignment across the business—marketing, partnerships, trip development—while giving customers something they’ve never had before: a clear roadmap. Instead of choosing between education or experience, they now get both, integrated into a single system built on performance, discipline and adventure.
Looking ahead, the destinations will reflect that evolution. From high-volume fisheries ideal for learning, to tournament stages where reputations are built, to specialized destinations that reward precision, and finally to remote frontiers where the unknown drives everything. The Galápagos is just the start.
From where I sit—somewhere between anticipation for the bite ahead and the bigger picture unfolding—one thing is clear: Marlin Expeditions has evolved into something far more intentional.
Four tiers. One standard. A clear path forward for anglers chasing something more.
