For many years, I traveled to and from the Southern Caribbean from the East Coast of the United States, always making it a point to stop in the Dominican Republic and spend a couple of days fishing. It is a tough location to pass up. For years I had heard about the amazing blue marlin fishing on the FADs that seem to hold numbers of blue marlin unlike anywhere else on Earth. Add in the numbers of white marlin in the spring off Cap Cana and the mix of sailfish and white marlin showing up on the FADs, and the DR has gone from a blue marlin fishing paradise to grand slam central.
What sets the Dominican Republic apart is how it is becoming a year-round billfishery. It is truly a place where you have a shot at catching a marlin—many marlin, really—any day of the year. Of course, there are peak times, but they seem to get longer each year and are close to overlapping. Unlike other hotspots, the pressure here is usually spread out. Even during peak season, you rarely fish rigger-to-rigger with other boats, and most crews work together well to help capitalize on the bite each day.
The two best marinas in the Dominican Republic are Cap Cana and Casa de Campo. Both are beautiful, first-class marinas that offer plenty of amenities for the traveling sport fisherman. Casa de Campo is a luxurious paradise with everything you could ever need and more on the massive property. And although the single-day release record for blue marlin has been set twice in the past year from Marina Cap Cana, both locations offer access to world-class billfishing just offshore.
In Cap Cana, there is a large marina and an immense property that spans for miles with many hotels, restaurants, golf courses, and beautiful homes to rent. And it’s all within 15 minutes of Punta Cana Airport, making it easy to get to. In the spring months you can catch white marlin, with the occasional blue marlin and sailfish right out front of the cut. The rest of the season is spent primarily targeting blue marlin on the FADs that are a 20- to 40-mile run from the marina. When the bite is hot, which is often, you have a real possibility of double-digit days of billfish, and even double-digit days on blue marlin alone.
The camaraderie at the dock is what you would hope for in the fishing community—everyone is helpful and happy to be there, and they all seem to work together. Most captains call out their released fish and location on the VHF radio, making it easier for a traveling crew to learn where the fish are and why in less time. The vibe is relaxed but electric when the season is going strong.
Whether you want to go on a hardcore fishing trip and get your reps in hooking billfish or take time away with friends and family for some R&R and a little fishing, the DR will deliver. It’s easy to see why so many crews make the DR part of their seasonal migration. If it’s billfish and relaxed vibes you are looking for, you can’t miss this location. For many, it’s the crown jewel in a global billfishing campaign. Either way, once you’ve fished the Dominican, it stays with you. Every time I go, I come for the bite—and every time I leave with an even deeper respect for a world-class fishery that continues to elevate itself, and redefine what’s possible, season after season.
Marinas
The DR’s two marquee marinas are Marina Cap Cana and Marina Casa de Campo. Cap Cana is renowned for its proximity to the FADs, full-service amenities and tournament-ready atmosphere. Casa de Campo, located in La Romana, offers a luxurious resort feel with direct access to prime waters in-season.
Lodging
In Cap Cana, there are many all-inclusive resort options near the marina as well as rentals. Or stay in style at Eden Roc Cap Cana, an exclusive property offering five-star suites, beachfront villas and on-site restaurants. Casa de Campo Resort & Villas provides spacious accommodations, from rooms to private estates, ideal for anglers traveling with family or larger groups.
Dining
For fresh local seafood with upscale flair and a view in Cap Cana, try La Palapa by Eden Roc. Barbudo is right near the marina and has excellent food and drinks. Another nearby option is SBG, which has an excellent menu and upscale vibes. In Casa de Campo, try another SBG location, which is on the water here, or La Cana Bar and Lounge.
Charters
Tease Me is available for bookings at Marina Cap Cana while Unbelievable offers charters at Marina Casa de Campo. Meanwhile, Delta Dawn is available for charter trips from both locations depending on the time of year. All three operations are known for experienced crews, comfortable boats and deep local knowledge of the fishery.
