In the world of blue marlin fishing, few places combine accessibility, adventure and consistency like Cape Verde. Just off the coast of West Africa, these desertlike islands were once considered remote and difficult to reach. Today, they have become a premier big-game angling destination, offering reliable shots at trophy marlin alongside a growing tourism scene.
What draws anglers to fly so far for so long? The answer is simple: big blue marlin, and plenty of them. While other Atlantic hotspots might produce one or two fish a week, Cape Verde routinely delivers multiple shots a day, including fish topping 800 pounds. The fishing effort typically concentrates along the leeward sides of São Vicente, Santo Antão, São Nicolau and the famous San Pedro point. Here, calmer waters offer consistent action throughout much of the year.
Crews troll a mix of lures and pitch baits, and can raise double-digit numbers on the best days. Stories of 10-plus release days are not uncommon, making Cape Verde one of the few places in the world where quality and quantity collide.
Getting There and Getting Around
Not long ago, reaching Cape Verde meant layovers in Lisbon, long island hops and overnight delays. Today, it’s far simpler. Daily direct flights from Lisbon and Paris deliver anglers straight into São Vicente, just four hours across the Atlantic. Seasonal service from Amsterdam and other European hubs adds even more options. From the airport, a short 15-minute taxi ride brings you to downtown Mindelo, where most hotels, restaurants and the charter fleet are located.
Once in town, there’s little need to rent a car. Most of what anglers need, from docks to dining, is within walking distance. And for those venturing to outer islands in pursuit of the bite, accommodations there, though simpler, add a layer of charm to the adventure.
Mindelo: The Hub of It All
Mindelo, on São Vicente, has blossomed into the heart of Cape Verde’s sport-fishing scene. Once a dusty port, it now boasts a developed waterfront, lively cafes and several modern hotels. Anglers will find provisioning easy, and the town offers plenty of places to unwind when the rods are stowed.
Mindelo’s dining scene continues to impress visiting anglers. You’ll find everything from casual post-fishing spots to upscale experiences within walking distance of most hotels.
Outer-Island Options
Sometimes the bite pushes away from São Vicente, and adventurous anglers follow. On Santo Antão, charming guesthouses like Mar da Tranquilidade and Casa Baobab provide clean, comfortable stays, complete with breakfast. Rooms are just a short walk from the rowboat taxis that ferry anglers back to their boats.
São Nicolau offers another unique outpost. Capt. Marty Bates operates Waypoint, a small lodge catering specifically to anglers. With only a few rooms, it’s wise to book well in advance. While the amenities are simpler than those in Mindelo, the payoff is the chance to stay on top of hot fishing grounds.
Why Cape Verde?
Cape Verde strikes the balance that anglers crave, offering world-class blue marlin fishing in a setting that remains both authentic and welcoming. The islands combine a reliable fishery, easy logistics and a vibrant culture. With direct European flights, short transfers, and a town built around the docks, Cape Verde offers an experience that is adventurous without being inaccessible.
