Boat Review: Jarrett Bay 68

The 68 sports a 260-square-foot cockpit complete with insulated icebox, watermaker, ice-maker and integrated livewell-in-fish-box design.

Continuing in the tradition of custom-crafted sport-fishing boats built for speed and sea-keeping ability, Jarrett Bay Boatworks is in the process of building one of its best performers to date. The company’s first 68-footer (hull No. 30), is scheduled for a 2001 delivery.

The 68 will be powered by DDC 16V2000 engines providing a maximum output of 1,850 hp each. The Detroits are expected to push the Reel’n and Deal’n at a 33-knot cruise with a projected top-end speed of over 43-knots.

The new Jarrett Bay features numerous custom additions throughout, and redundant mechanical systems are included. The air-conditioned engine room will comfortably accommodate most, with 6’4″ of headroom along the longitudinal centerline. The battery boxes, located directly below the de-misters, will be fully concealed, accessed through top-loading ports. Two storage lockers, to port and starboard, have also been added forward of the battery boxes, outboard of the engines. Each of these lockers will house the fuel-filter systems and additional systems storage requirements. A Lexan door on the lockers will permit “quick-view” diagnostic monitoring for each of the filter systems.

The 68 will feature a dedicated pump room located forward of the leading engine-room bulkhead to house pumps, hot-water heaters, air-conditioner systems, water makers and more.

A cold-molded hull combined with an extensive internal egg-crate system provides a strong, lightweight design. The hull bottom of the 68 was constructed with three layers of 5/8-inch fir, and the sides were planked with three layers of 1/4-inch okoume encapsulated in West Systems epoxy/composite.

The 68 sports a 260-square-foot cockpit complete with insulated icebox, watermaker, ice-maker and integrated livewell-in-fish-box design. Inside, the 68 will feature a galley-up configuration, with a three-stateroom\three-head layout.
