In a remarkable finish that was reminiscent of their dominating performance last year, Capt. Jon Duffie and the Agitator team won the second leg of the Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown, held February 22 to 25, 2017, in grand style. The team released 60 sailfish in three days and beat their closest competitor by 900 points, a wide margin in a tournament that’s usually determined by much closer finishes.
The team also took the lead for the overall series champion team, an honor that they also won in 2016. Agitator finished last year with a second-place finish in the first event of the Triple Crown, then a pair of firsts to round out their Costa Rica swing. This year, they were second in the first leg and now first in Leg II. History could be well on its way to repeating itself.
And in a tournament series usually defined by marlin releases, Agitator did it all with just sailfish, scoring 100 points per release (compared to any species of marlin, which are valued at 500 points each).
In second place was Dealer’s Choice, captained by Dan Scotti, who also scored their 5,100 points on sailfish alone, tallying 51 releases in three days. They were the top daily boat on Day Three. Finishing in third was Capt. Corey Kennington and the First Light team. They had 41 sailfish and two marlin for their three-day tournament run.
Gray Ingram’s Big Oh finished in fourth place with 5,000 points and Ted Smith’s team on Southern Pride were fifth with 4,900 points. For the tournament there were 1,635 billfish released, including 43 marlin, by the fleet of 52 participating boats.
