Some innovations come and go, but occasionally, something truly game-changing hits the market. That’s exactly what we have with the DTX series from Lindgren-Pitman (LP).
The new DTX series is an advanced electric-reel system that currently marries exclusively with Garmin units, making it a first-of-its-kind solution in the sport-fishing industry. These reels are fully integrated into the vessel’s NMEA network, allowing complete control through the Garmin multifunction displays. Instead of operating the reels manually or through a separate control system, everything is now accessible directly from the screen or even remotely through an iPad with Garmin’s ActiveCaptain app.
When powered on, the system displays an LP icon on the Garmin screen, enabling easy operation of the reels with preset options. This seamless integration eliminates the need for additional external controllers, streamlining the fishing process and reducing the physical space traditionally required for reel operation.
Custom and Secure
One of the primary challenges with traditional electric teaser reels is finding the appropriate mounting space. The DTX series solves this issue with a revolutionary mounting approach: placing the reels within an existing enclosure on the hardtop. By mounting the reels on the hardtop, I can maintain a clean and uncluttered cockpit. Additionally, the reels are bolted in place, making them significantly more secure than traditional setups, where reels stored in rod holders are vulnerable to theft.

One of the standout features of the DTX series is that the system allows users to configure reels for different styles of fishing, adjusting settings for speed, length and stopping points.
For instance, while fishing in Stuart, Florida, I can set the reels to deploy smaller teasers when targeting sailfish. In Bermuda, where I pull heavier dredges and larger marlin lures, I can adjust settings to accommodate that.
The Competitive Edge
Traditional dredge reels require a dedicated crewmember to manually operate them. With the DTX system, dredge adjustments can be made instantly from the helm if the captain chooses to do so. This allows me to dynamically lower dredges to different depths during turns or retrievals, mimicking natural bait movements. One of my favorite applications with the DTX is when marking bait or fish on the omni. In a hard turn, I can deploy the dredge down to a desired depth to try to pull that fish up. As we straighten out, I can retract the dredge at a controlled pace, and quite often our fish is right behind it. This level of precision and adaptability is unprecedented and definitely gives a competitive edge during tournaments.
Garmin’s ActiveCaptain app further enhances the versatility of the DTX series by enabling remote operation from an iPad or a smartphone. This capability keeps more hands on deck engaged in active fishing rather than running back and forth to manually control reels.

Installation and Maintenance
The DTX series is relatively straightforward to install—like installing a Garmin screen. The system requires four main connections: power, NMEA, network and control wiring, all of which link to a central LP junction box. This box, similar to those used for sonar processors, supports up to four reels if you so desire.
Once installed, the system requires minimal maintenance. Since all configurations are managed digitally, wear and tear on physical components is reduced.
A Game-Changer
By integrating cutting-edge technology with practical design, the new DTX system enhances efficiency, security and performance for big-game anglers. Having worked closely with LP on this project, I am confident that the DTX series will become a staple in the offshore-fishing community. Time to get dialed in for the upcoming tournament season!
