Hands-Free illumination

A bright, dependable, hands-free light can be a lifesaver during an emergency situation at sea. A loss of power can mean struggling to locate the problem in the bowels of a dark engine room, and fixing something by yourself while trying to hold a flashlight can be futile in a pitching sea. With a tough lightweight lighting option in mind, Pelican Products recently introduced the ProGear 2760 LED Headlight for those who might need a hands-free light that will not fail in an emergency. Features include high, low, night-vision-friendly red and flashing modes. It also boasts a downcast mode to provide an optimal close-quarter reading light for use in tents, engine compartments and underneath counters. Available in black, white and translucent red, the unit’s 2760 LED is constructed of water- and weather-resistant polymer and pivots to a 45-degree angle to direct clean, brilliant light where it’s needed. Weighing in at just over three ounces with three included AAA batteries, it comes with a cloth strap that is comfortable for bare heads and a full-time battery life indicator. Hamlin on Your Face

We’ve heard a few stories about legendary Capt. Ron Hamlin getting into an errant mate’s face, but for the first time ever, you can get a pair of Hamlins on your face! The first of the 2014 styles to kick off the new year, Costa Del Mar’s Hamlin is named for the man who’s released more than 27,000 billfish throughout his career. The Hamlin style offers tough, durable features, including co-injected nylon molded frames, sturdy integral hinges, and no-slip Hydrolite nose pads and temple tips. Frame colors include tortoise, matte black, blackout, white and, in late spring, Realtree Xtra Camo. Available in 580G (glass) or 580P (plastic), lens colors include gray, amber, copper, sunrise, blue mirror, green mirror and silver mirror. For more information, visit

A Breath of
Fresh Mojo

Ask any angler who’s spent a long day soaking wet, and they’ll tell you that it’s not a whole lot of fun. However, many traditional rain jackets are constructed of a heavy rubberized fabric that, while waterproof, doesn’t allow water vapor to escape. A great solution is the Hydro Block Jacket and Pants from Mojo Sportswear. Constructed of a breathable, yet waterproof, fabric, the Hydro Block series allows water vapor to escape while keeping water droplets out. We feel it’s the ultimate in warm-weather protection for rain or salt spray on those rough days offshore. Pockets are in just the right places, with closures that make sense. Mojo keeps an eye on the details, like using taped seams for increased waterproofing and a cut that’s better suited for active anglers and deckhands. There’s a detachable hood with two adjustment points for a custom fit. For more information, visit Roland Thomas Moriarty

Step into the Tempest

Pelagic likes to call its products “Commercial Grade, Angler Approved,” and its new Tempest Bib certainly lives up to the motto. The Tempest Bib is constructed of heavy-duty PVC rubber, which means that it is 100 percent waterproof. Strategically engineered welded seams ensure zero leakage, and an inner chest storage pocket offers a waterproof seal for a cellphone, iPod or other electronic device. Adjustable elastic straps provide a custom fit, so your range of motion remains unrestricted — important when wiring a giant bluefin. The Tempest also boasts adjustable elastic straps and comes in medium, large and extra large. For more information, including a cool sizing chart, visit

Light It Up

Underwater lighting options continue to astound dock walkers everywhere, and Lumishore Limited recently introduced a lighting system that will surely make folks stop and take notice. The new THX601 and THX1201 Single Color Thru-Hull Underwater Lights represent some of the brightest underwater lights on the market. The THX601 emits a powerful 9,790 fixture lumens, and the THX1201 emits an incredible 16,010 fixture lumens, both with a wide 110-degree light beam. The lights reach these levels through the use of High Intensity Chip On Board LED technology. The lights come in both blue and white, although you can custom order colors as well.
