I'm always looking for quick and simple ways to do things, and I recently came up with a neat way to make an almost indestructible double or single hook-set in a matter of seconds. Just about everyone is familiar with the long metal butterfly jigs popularized by Shimano over the last couple of years. These incredibly effective jigs use a couple of super-sharp hooks rigged on a short, heavy section of Dacron or a similar material. You simply loop both hooks to a metal loop at the top of the jig, allowing them to float and flutter as you work the water column.
During a recent tuna trip we found ourselves surrounded by leaping yellowfin that didn't want to eat what we were offering. Since Peter B. Wright is always telling us to match the hatch when tuna fishing and the fish seemed to be feeding on tiny baitfish, I decided to downsize our baits. The only problem was I didn't have any small hooks that looked right in the small Mold Craft Needlefish lure that I wanted to use. One of the fellows on board broke out his jig hooks and asked me if they would work. I took a look, looped two of the hooks together, added a touch of floss to the bend of the front hook to keep it tight to the cord on the back hook and we were ready to go. The Owner 7/0 Dancing Stinger hooks looked great in the tiny lure, and in no time we had fresh sashimi squirming on the deck. This little rig is virtually indestructible; we found that out when we caught a 45-pound wahoo on the same rig on the ride home.
