When fishing in places where you can get 20 or 30 shots a day, you spend a lot of time going in and out of a bait box. And it doesn't take long for you to figure out ways to make your bait cooler more fishermen-friendly. First off, inside the cooler use a metal tray to store your bait on. A removable metal tray (www.carolinabaittray.com) is easy to clean and transfers the cold to the bait better than plastics — which means your bait will stay fresh longer. To keep it level in the box, install a strip of StarBoard on the front and back of the cooler to form a shelf for the tray to sit on. Another trick we use to make our cooler more accessible is to install a spring hinge. This keeps the cooler lid open as you put baits in or pull them out — no matter how big the seas get. A couple of stainless-steel screws are all you need to install the hinge.
