Stinky Sock

This little trick has us smiling come dinnertime by keeping us well supplied with swordfish steaks for the grill.

Most of us love the taste of swordfish, and I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't get excited at seeing one jumping in the lights.

To help make sure we get our bites so we can eat well a couple of nights a week, on the Reel Tight we always spice up our swordfish rigs with a bit of added scent. Joe "the Seagull" Figiel picked this trick up during his headboat days.

Before deploying our swordfish rigs, we put our weight in a tube sock and attach it to our leader with a rubber band. Then we dip the lead and sock into a bucket of fish oil and let the sock soak up some of this enticing liquid. Once the bait reaches the desired depth, the sock starts leaking oil, providing a nice scent trail that even the most wary swordies can't resist. This little trick has us smiling come dinnertime by keeping us well supplied with swordfish steaks for the grill.
