I'm always looking for good lubricants to use on my rods and reels that won't be sticky when they dry and harm the environment. Recently, I've had several folks urge me to try two products from Australia called Inox-mx3 and Lanox-mx4 to keep the salt out of my gear, so I gave them a go. I do a lot of wading for snook and redfish, and the spinning gear really takes a beating if and when I make a misstep and submerge the reel. Even high-dollar reels will lock up tight if they take a dunking and aren't cleaned and rinsed thoroughly as soon as possible. If you wait one or two days, it's too late. I had a couple of casualties lying around the house and thought that the almost-ruined spinners might make a good test for the two lubricants.
I took the plates off each spinner and sprayed them both with a good jet of lube - one reel getting the Inox-mx3, the other getting the Lanox-mx4. I let it sit for an hour and then hit them again, rinsing out all the mess that had gathered inside. I then put on a dab of blue grease and put them back together; they ran better than new! I've since used the Inox-mx3 to coat all my reels after each day on the water. I really love the mx3 since it's a food-grade product and is made from nonhazardous materials; that way I can use it at home around my kids. The Lanox doesn't have a food certification, but it is kosher. Neither product will harm metal, plastic, paints, enamel or fiberglass, and they don't contain acid, silicone or kerosene.
