Extra Leader Security

I found a simple way to make sure that the knot I use to attach my wind-on leaders stays put.

We fish on a 32-foot Regulator out of Ocean City, Maryland, and since I’ve been the mate in charge of the tackle for some time, I’ve learned quite a bit about making sure my gear and rigging stays tight.

I found a simple way to make sure that the knot I use to attach my wind-on leaders — which is quite a bit different from the loop-to-loop connection that most crews use — stays put. I tie my main line directly to the loop in my wind-on leader with a simple cinch knot and add a dab of superglue to keep the knot intact. We only catch about 20 billfish a year, but this little bit of insurance and leader system works great on every species we encounter — including big tuna and wahoo.
