Tournament Cable (www.tournamentcable.com) received a patent on its Double Hook Cable Rig a while ago. It has an adjustable front and a hook and loop on the backside that allows you to add a second stinger hook near the tail of the bait. This rig definitely puts an end to the short strike when using ballyhoo. Flash-forward 15 years, and Tournament Cable found a way to supersize its innovative rig to accommodate big baits.
Especially designed for bigger baits like mackerel and big squids, the Easy Double is a fully adjustable rig that allows almost anyone of any skill level to rig a double-hooked bait that swims like a live one. Offered with mono or cable and with J hooks or circle hooks, these rigs can accommodate just about any size of bait.
To rig your baits with these rigs, lay the hook-set alongside the bait, and slide off the piece of shrink tubing that holds the front hook in place. Now position the front hook up near the head the way you normally would - either under the gill and out the belly or in the head - and pull the back hook to where you want it placed in the bait. Once you have the front and back hook positioned, slide the shrink wrap back over the eye of the front hook, and secure it with a couple of half hitches of dental floss. This will keep the front hook from moving when the bait is trolled. Remove the back hook from the cable rig, and insert an open-eye needle into the vent. Push the needle up into the bait and exit at the gill plates. Connect the loop that holds the back hook to the needle, and pull the loop back through the bait and out the anal vent. Now attach the back hook to the loop coming out of the vent. Pull the back hook up into the desired position, and insert the front hook in the head. Now use your needle and thread to sew up your bait as you normally would.
These rigs come in both mono and cable, with circle hooks or regular J hooks, in sizes ranging from 9/0 to 14/0. For complete rigging instructions or to pick up a couple of these cool hook-sets, contact Tournament Cable at 800-979-3474.
