The White Marlin Open, the world’s largest billfish tournament, is gearing up for another action-packed event August 6-10, 2012 in Ocean City, Maryland. The tournament, which is in its 39th year, attracts hundreds of boats and thousands of anglers from all over the world, vying for million in prize money.
Last year’s event was one of the most exciting ever with 237 boats participating and two white marlins weighing over 80 pounds reeled in. The leader board was constantly changing from the first day of fishing until the last. The $2.13 million in total prize money was awarded with over $1.17 million in prize money paid out in the white marlin category alone.
Although the heaviest white marlin is the most valuable fish, the format of the White Marlin Open allows for many winners. With the daily release points and daily meat fish categories, anglers do not have to catch the biggest fish of the tournament to win prize money. There are 16 different optional added entry levels offered with entry fees ranging from $50 to $5,000. Because each entry level is independent of the others, a boat does not need to go “all-in” in order to win big prize money. In 2011, the white marlin winner-take-all Level E alone paid out $615,000.
The White Marlin Open has become a must-fish event for anglers offering lots of competition and camaraderie. Marlin Magazine has recognized the White Marlin Open as one of the “Top Ten Billfish Tournaments in the World,” “The Best Bang for Your Buck,” and one of the top 100 influential events in Sportfishing. The Billfish Tournament Network has rated the White Marlin Open number one among billfish tournaments worldwide.
Over the years, the tournament has grown into a huge spectator event with massive crowds gathering nightly to watch the weigh-ins and partake in the fun, festival-like atmosphere with food, drinks and different vendors and artists. With lots of great restaurants, a beautiful beach and fun boardwalk, Ocean City is the perfect home for the family friendly White Marlin Open.
