Video: Swordfish taking mate overboard wins at film festival

The film festival was a fundraiser for United Way of the Florida Keys

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys -- Captain Nick Stanczyk's dramatic footage of his Bn'M charterboat's mate being thrown into the ocean while trying to boat a Florida Keys–caught swordfish garnered top honors Sunday at the inaugural Islamorada Fishing Film Festival.

Stanczyk won a Horizon VHF radio from Caribee Boat Sales, dinner for four at the Outback at the Hampton Inn in Islamorada and a signed copy of author Doug Kelly's recently released "Florida's Fishing Legends and Pioneers."

The film festival was a fundraiser for United Way of the Florida Keys.

I have been an avid fisherman fo almost 40 years and during that time some things I have learned is, if your not going to eat it, as long as it is not the female of the species and if there is not an over abundance of these types of fish, LET THEM GO!! If one answer to either question is in question, then release it as soon as possible by NOT TAKING IT OUT OF THE WATER!!

He forgot his hat....it looked like a nice hat. I would have made the capt'n turn around and get it.

I find it hysterical that everybody is so quick to call these guys amateurs. I worked the deck when Nick Stanczyk caught a 60 pound bull dolphin on fly in 8 foot seas when he was 11. This guy has more time on the water at age 26 or 27 than most people who are posting will ever have. He averages 2 swords per day every day he fishes for them. What you are looking at is a slick calm summer day in the tropics and a rat swordfish, a bunch of friends out having fun. Nobody was worried as there was nothing to worry about. The fish did not knock the mate over---he slipped and fell in on a boat with low freeboard. He even saved the gaff. As for lifejackets---are you kidding me? In case he was lost in the 6 inch swells? I personally guarantee that the googans posting here all wear matching Team WeKillEm outfits when they pile into their weekend warrior center console for a day of not-catching-squat. Seriously the only person in the world who caught more daytime swordfish last year was Nick's uncle Scott on the Catch 22. Name ring a bell? If you do not recognize the name Stanczyk in the worldwide fishing community it is you who are the amatuer.

From an admitted rookie, please tell me what the mate (or anyone else) did wrong, other than the obvious lack of flotation devices, and the aforementioned tail rope.... in other words, should anything else have been done to have handled the fish most safely? And you can assume I'm grilling him afterward. Thanks.

WHY IN HELL ARE SO MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD SO NEGATIVE TO OTHERS THESE DAYS? WHY DON'T YOU NAYSAYERS POST UP YOUR FREAKING BIGTIME VIDEOS AND BACK UP YOUR SMACK MOUTH? BRING IT ON! YOU CAN DO SO IN MY FORUM ON THIS SITE: "WAHOONBOX... UNLEASH THE BEAST"

I BET THAT 99 OF 100 PEOPLE POSTING NEGATIVE COMMENT ON THIS VIDEO HAVE NEVER ONCE TOUCHED A LEADER. ESPECIALLY ONE WITH THE DEVIL HIMSELF ON ONE END....

PEOPLE,PEOPLE, PEOPLE,... THE FISH IS IN THE BOAT....IT'S DEADONDECK....FILLETS WILL BE SERVED...NO ONE IS HURT....END OF STORY.

AS FOR ME, HELL I COULDN'T HAVE CLIMBED BACK IN THE RIG AFTER GOING OVER WITHOUT THE ASSISTANCE OF A FORTY TON CRANE.....NOT TO MENTION HE SAVED THE GAFF TO BOOT.

This is suppose to be one of the better captains, huh? What an idiot! I spent most of best times of my life fishing down there. It is hard to go back to the Keys now--esp. after fishing down there in the 60's and early 70's. Really, this captain is a news hound and he and his crew are dangerous.

Unprofessional! Lucky nobody was hurt!

pure stupidity and incredibly dangerous...capt.werner milec (sri lanka )

People will do anything to shoot exciting video, these days. That doesn't look like a very experienced crew. Good thing Mr. Mako didn't come calling...

Ever hear of a tail rope? What a stupid risk to the boat, the mate and the party! Anyone notice the comments? "Get my picture! Get my picture!" Another mate with a lot to learn!

0 Good Comment?

I'm not gonna comment on how they attempted to handle that fish. I'm just glad no one got hurt

0 Good Comment?

After this experience probably painfull due to the bruising and the missing sunglases .. He'll definitelly learn.

0 Good Comment?

why all the criticism? are we all perfect? i don't think so. I'm sure he will think twice next time though.

I noticed when he came back up his sunglasses were missing. They look like Costa's. If so that was an expensive mistake.

Amateur deckie and pro fish. Got to love the strength of those broadies...

Can't wait to suss out the daytime technique off my home port of Brisbane Australia!!

0 Good Comment?

I agree, that is ridiculous. Whatever happened to safety first. I've decked in Alaska, Hawaii, and San Diego and if I ever pulled anything that stupid I'd be out of a job. Really? Amateurs...

0 Good Comment?

So they win an award for underestimating the potential life threatening situation and then making the same mistake landing the fish the second time?

What kind of film festival was THAT?
