Perfect Parts takes 2007 Bermuda Triple Crown
By Staff
Wed, Aug 01, 2007

The Bermuda Triple Crown series sees record numbers of white marlin as well as the large blue marlin Bermuda is known for. A record 61 different teams participated in at least one Triple Crown event with the biggest blue marlin in the series weighing 728 pounds. A total of 209 billfish were caught; 199 were photographed and released with nine blues boated over the 500-pound minimum weight. The releases consisted of 116 blue marlin, 83 white and one spearfish. The series awarded a record $880,000 in cash and $60,000 in prizes over the three-event series. To fish the BTC, visiting boats making the crossing must run at least 680 miles to reach Bermuda. Mix in the charter and private boats and you have many of the most competitive teams in fishing plying the rich waters off Bermuda. With the average blue marlin weighing 400 pounds and some reaching the grander range, you have a very exciting big fish series.

The red-hot, first-time visiting team from Indianapolis, Indiana, and Jupiter, Florida, on Perfect Parts, a 74' Tribute, won the championship with a record 5,400 points. Owner Allan Bir, Captain Steve "Snag" Holmes, mate Joel McLeod and team member Skip Giordano recorded 10 blue and two white marlin releases. The team on Perfect Parts, including the boat captain, mate and anglers, will each receive the coveted Triple Crown Champion Ring from Vanmark Jewelry; a bronze blue marlin sculpture from Geoffrey Smith; a trophy from King Sailfish Mounts; championship apparel from Pelagic Gear embroidered by Tropical Design Studios; a Triple Crown painting from Steve Goione; a Furuno Sounder; special triple crown lures from Jaslure, Mold Craft, Pacific Trolling Gear and Ocean Waves Sunglasses; a Pompanette flying gaff for the boat; and complimentary subscriptions to Marlin and Sport Fishing magazines. The top five 2007 boats scored more points than last year's winner. Late charging Que Mas scored 4,470, consistent Queen of Hearts scored 4,128, veteran Sea Toy caught two of the nine boated fish and scored well with 3,955 and Bree had an excellent series scoring 3,619.

The series kicked off with the Bermuda Billfish Blast July 2-4. Forty boats participated in 4- to 9-foot seas for a record $265,000 in cash and prizes. Local boat Queen of Hearts, a 42' Hatteras, with owner Walter Cross, Captain Peter Olander and angler Lovintz Cann of Bermuda placed third in the Billfish Blast and won the World Cup tournament with Cann's 728-pound blue, the largest fish weighed in the BTC series. Visiting boat from Daphne, Alabama, Grander, a 65' Hatteras, with owner Marion Uter, Captain John Starks, mate Emery Black and anglers Ryan Johnson along with Bob and Robbie Osbourne released two blue marlin and boated a 568-pounder to win the Blast and lead the Triple Crown series. Que Mas, a 72' American Custom from Islamorada, Florida, with owner Wally Whitley, Captain Travis Butters, mates and anglers Donny Lang, Joey Hendrix and Tyler Morris placed second. A total of 26 blues and 13 whites were successfully photographed and released with two qualifying blues coming in at 568 and 728 pounds. These two fish accounted for two of the five total qualifying fish caught in the World Cup on July 4. Bermuda won the World Cup, making it victorious four of the past five years.

The Bermuda Big Game Classic July 12-16: Fifty-seven teams competed for a record $475,000 in cash and prizes. A total of 58 blues, 47 whites and one spearfish were successfully photographed and released with four qualifying blues coming to the scales. The tournament seated over 500 guests at the gala awards banquet. By the end of the Classic, the winning team of Perfect Parts, a 74' Tribute, with owner Allan Bir, Captain Steve "Snag" Holmes, mate Joel McLeod and high point angler Skip Giordano released five blue marlin to win the tournament and lead the Triple Crown. Giordano also took home the high point angler award with four blue marlin releases. Three of Perfect Parts blue marlin were caught on the final day for a come-from-behind win. Its closest competitor was the second place team on Sea Toy, a 60' Spencer, scoring 2,170 points, releasing three whites and two blue marlin and boating one 570-pound blue. The team included Captain Bull Tolson of Manteo, North Carolina, anglers John and Joann Truschke, Bill Martini, Joan Nichols of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Ray Gannon of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Sea Toy also won the Marlin Magazine Manufacturers Cup for Spencer Yachts. In third place was first-time competitor J.A.C.S., a 58' Merritt, with owner Matt Daniels, Captain Ed Yannetty, mate John Reynolds, anglers Chase Daniels and Kramer Hendrix all from Cincinnati, Ohio, scoring 1,900 points with three blue marlin and two white marlin releases. World Cup champion Queen of Hearts, a 42' Hatteras, with owner Walter Cross, Captain Peter Olander, Lovintz Cann, Glen Astwood and Kevin Walsh scored 1,700 and won a daily release jackpot keeping the team in the hunt for the Triple Crown. Another new team for the Classic, Weez in the Keys, with owner Scott Robins, Captain Dave Morris, mate Taylor Walsh, anglers Alex Adler, Patty Stone, Bart Birnbaum of Islamorada, Florida, and Brooks Rans of Bermuda boated a 616-pound blue, the largest of the Classic. The fish earned the team the largest check of the event.

The Sea Horse Anglers Club Billfish Tournament July 18-22: A record 32 boats participated in the tournament for a record purse of $137,000 in cash and prizes. Visiting boat Que Mas, a 72' American Custom, with owner Wally Whitley, Captain Travis Butters, mates Tyler Morris and Joey Hendrix and angler Donny Lange of Islamorada, Florida, won the tournament by releasing one blue, boating a 570-pound blue and releasing six white marlin. The 570 blue and three whites came in the final hour of the tournament. Visiting boat Sea Toy with angler John Truschke caught the largest fish of the Sea Horse ¯ a 685-pound blue. This earned Sea Toy the lion's share of the largest marlin jackpots and top cash boat. Perfect Parts had another great showing and finished second, releasing four blue marlin and one white. Perfect Parts angler Skip Giordano won the top angler award in the Sea Horse, helping the team add a Daily Billfish Release Jackpot win. A total of 32 blues and 27 whites were caught with three blues weighed.

Perfect Parts holds on to the prestigious Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship with record releases of 10 blue marlin and two white for a total of 5,400 points. Big congratulations to team Perfect Parts, winners of the 2007 Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship.
