2013 Offshore World Championship Announced for Quepos, Costa Rica

'Olympics of Fishing' scheduled for April 14-19

The IGFA Offshore World Championship began 13 years ago and continues to be the largest international offshore fishing series in the world. In 2009, the IGFA began securing a partnership with Bonnier Corp. to assume the responsibilities of the Championship so it could focus more resources on conservation and youth programs. For the last four years the series has flourished, bringing the world’s anglers together while supporting the IGFA.

Following the 2012 Championship, the IGFA will no longer be licensing its name to any tournaments and finalizes the transition it began in 2009 with Bonnier and Bonnier’s Fishing Group including the crews at Marlin, Sport Fishing, Salt Water Sportsman and Fly Fishing in Salt Waters magazines. The newly formed Offshore World Championship (OWC) will continue under Bonnier Corp.’s Fishing Group and support the IGFA’s conservation, education and world record-keeping programs that sport fishing so vitally needs.

Mike Myatt, IGFA’s COO, comments, “We couldn’t be more pleased with the job Tournament Director Dan Jacobs, Assistant Director Lynda Wilson, and the first-class group of professionals at Bonnier have done with the tournament. We are confident that the series and Championship is in good hands, and we look forward to them continuing what we started.”

The IGFA will continue to attend the Offshore World Championship and host its traditional angler party after the first day of fishing. As this transition takes place, the OWC will continue to work with all of the current qualifying events and the thousands of anglers that compete annually. Bonnier looks forward to making this a seamless transition and continuing an incredible series and Championship for the world’s offshore anglers.

The Offshore World Championship has been referred to as the “Olympics of Fishing” and — like the Olympics — the Championship has been hosted in different world-class locations, including Hawaii and Cabos San Lucas, Mexico. For 2013, Bonnier is excited to officially announce the Offshore World Championship has accepted the sponsorship and partnership of Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT) and Marnia Pez Vela and will host the OWC in Quepos, Costa Rica, April 14 through 19. Quepos is one of the first locations to put Costa Rica on the international fishing map and possesses all of the necessary elements to host the OWC including a new marina, incredible offshore fishing, calm waters, quality resorts and charter operators.

Bonnier is very excited to partner with the incredible groups at ICT and Marina Pez Vela and look forward to everyone experiencing this fantastic fishery and community. Details for the OWC are being finalized and will be updated on the official website
