With more folks using superbraided lines - either as main line or backing when targeting offshore species - these incredibly thin lines continually spawn tackle innovations to keep up with their small diameter and phenomenal strength.

AFTCO, long an innovator on the West Coast sport-fishing scene, recently made changes to all its tip-top guides to specifically accommodate the use of superbraided lines.

AFTCO initiated the change in response to the very low clearance required to keep braided lines from jumping off the rollers while being used to fish deep-drop rods, jigging rods and in some live-bait applications. The Bigfoot top now comes with a low-clearance roller assembly. AFCTO machines the tip's rollers to eliminate the small flats at the top of the V-groove and increases the width slightly to lessen the gap between roller and frame. This also creates a greater offset between the inner rolled edges of the top frame and the outer edges of the roller, which totally eliminates any possibility of the braided line jumping between the edge of the roller and the top frame. AFTCO made this change to all sizes of its tip-top rollers in the AFTCO line of standard, large-head, Bigfoot and swivel tops.
