Three weeks back I got the chance to jump over to Chub Cay with captains Rick Murphy, Jeff Hagaman and Jim Ross of the Chevy Florida Insider Report. Murphy flew all the captains of the show over to his house in Chub so we could enjoy a little rest and relaxation and get to know each other better. (Check out a movie below of our arrival in Chub)
I’m writing this just before our holiday break. It’s always a bustling time of year, and shipping a magazine right before the holidays provides an exciting couple of weeks before the much-needed end-of-year vacation.Fishing plays a big part in my Christmas routine. I gather up the family, head up to the Florida Panhandle and stay with my parents for a couple of weeks, fattening up on my mom’s wonderful cooking. It’s also a time to spend a few days on the water with my brother, Mark.

The 46 boat fleet, comprised of some of the best live bait fishermen in the world, racked up 659 releases the first day
Oh, it's wonderful to get away from the daily stresses at work by taking some time off and spending the holidays with the extended family. It's a peaceful two weeks spent with my two boys, my daughter, my parents and my brother's two boys. Did I say peaceful? This year, over the course of those two serene weeks, I was granted the opportunity to spend time at the tastefully decorated and always busy Twin Cities Emergency Room in Niceville, Florida.

I got an email a couple of weeks ago from biologist Sam Friederichs down at Marina Papagayo down in Costa Rica involving his efforts to affix a Crittercam to a billfish. These underwater cameras have already thrilled the world with amazing footage of free roaming animals such as sharks as they go about their daily lives without human interference. Well, it didn’t take long for the guys to get one on a billfish and this morning Friederichs sent a few pics to prove it!

Viking Yachts provided an excellent reason for me to skip town on Friday and head down to Riviera Beach for the company's VIP Boat Show, held at their service center. A good crowd showed up the event, which is much like a mini-preview of the upcoming Miami Boat Show at the end of the month.

Aftco's new built-in drag scale allows any fisherman, expert or novice, to see exactly how much drag pressure they are applying during the battle. This allows you to test your line's limits and catch fish faster without fear of break offs.
I just returned from the always-exciting Miami International Boat Show (my 19th in a row) and, as usual, I had a pretty wonderful time catching up with old friends and checking out new products heading into the marketplace. The show got off to a good start at a Hatteras media party Wednesday night where the always stalwart company unveiled a new GT63 EFB enclosed flybridge model that does 40 knots. And she doesn't look like a wedding cake.

Just returned from the beautiful Crocodile Bay Lodge after fishing with the winners of the Marlin's Biggest Fan contest, Mike Lawrence and Claudia Cooper from Seattle, Washington. Really super people, which was a great relief because you never know who's going to win one of this things! We had a terrific time together and got into the fish a little bit. The first day started out pretty slow, but the bite turned on at about 2:30 and we caught three sails out of about 8 bites.
