Legend Custom Yachts

Build it strong, build it light, and build it to get the job done. That's pretty much our slogan here at Legend," says Scott Gerber, president of Legend Custom Yachts.

The company took that slogan to heart, pushing the envelope of high-tech composites when it began constructing the new 37. "As far as we know, our boats are the only sport-fish boats built in the world today using pre-impregnated resinous materials," Gerber says. "There is no building material that has a greater strength-to-weight ratio. Our hulls are laid up using Kevlar, S-glass, carbon fiber and pre-impregnated-epoxy resinous materials that are post-cured to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. This focus and effort allow us to build a 37-foot hull that weighs 1,550 pounds and is actually stronger than its conventional counterpart that weighs in at around 7,000 pounds."

Legend's strong and lightweight hulls make the perfect recipe to achieve some serious speed. Gerber says the 37, available in an express or walkaround, is capable of 50-plus knots. The Legend 58, built as an express, is projected to top out at 65 knots. The 58-footer will feature a titanium tower to stand up to the pressures of moving along at that speed.

"Our clients are seasoned fishermen who want a no-fuss, good-looking boat that is going to get them to the grounds fast and safely, time and again, regardless of the weather," Gerber says. "To meet those needs, we constantly look for ways to improve our boats. We not only listen to what our suppliers have for new products, but we look beyond our industry — for example, to the aerospace and auto industries."

  At a Glance:
•  High-tech composite construction
•  Extremely lightweight
•  Speeds over 55 knots
The technologies now used by Legend were previously seen in the America's Cup and high-performance race cars. "We chose this technology to advance Legend's quest to build the lightest, fastest, strongest and most technologically advanced boat money can buy," Gerber says.

All Legend Yachts are designed in- house, using a proven template. "The primary focus is to create a hull that will handle well at high speeds and create the perfect fishing platform," Gerber says. And the company builds all of its vessels to order so owners can customize the look and layout to their liking.
