Boatbuilder's Expo -Part II
Boatbuilder's Expo (continued)
Sep 4, 2007
      Back to Introduction

Henriques Yachts

When Jack Henriques immigrated to the United States in his 20s, he carried four generations of Portuguese boatbuilding experience with him. He founded Henriques Yachts in 1977 and quickly launched its first model, the Maine Coaster, a 35-foot Downeast-style boat.

Thirty years later, the company focuses on the sport-fishing market, producing nine models ranging in size from 28 to 50 feet. The newest model, the 30 Express, debuted at the Atlantic City Boat Show in February 2007.

Since the beginning, Henriques operated as a family business and continues to do so today. Jack Henriques and his son-in-law, production manager Manny Costa, visualize, design and oversee production on all of the vessels.

"Henriques is customer-driven when it comes to changes in our design," Costa says. "We respond to our customers and their changing needs. We are also dedicated to maintaining the standard of excellence upon which our company was built."

Each Henriques is built to order, which opens up room to customize interiors and fishing packages. "We're really a semi-custom builder," Costa says. "If there is anything that can be customized, we will do it. We modify our interiors to fit the owners' needs."

At a Glance:
•  Extra-large cockpits
•  Roomy engine rooms
•  Semi-custom models from 28 to 50 feet
The biggest distinguishing factor on a Henriques is the use of a large cockpit. "We have the largest cockpits of any boats in our size," Costa says. "The fishermen we build for require space in the two areas in which they spend the majority of their time. Our cockpits and engine rooms are the roomiest in the industry. Our 50-
footer has a 210-square-foot cockpit." This trend works its way down the line. The 42 Express offers 155 square feet of space in the pit.

Henriques leaves the power choice up to the customer, and each model offers four different engine packages to choose from. "Henriques consistently refuses to compromise hull integrity, so we have found that engines with higher horsepower and greater efficiency have been the key to greater speed," Costa says.

As technology and building techniques improved over the years, the company philosophy remained the same. Says Costa, "Henriques has always been about building a safe, structurally sound vessel for the most demanding fishermen and the elements they brave when they tackle the sea."
