Whiticar Boat Works

Established in 1947, Whiticar Boat Works has enjoyed a storied, 60-year reputation for delivering a soft-riding, tough-as-nails sport-fishing yacht replete with custom woodwork and all the comforts of home.

"We pride ourselves in building the finest sport-fishing boats in the world," says chief boatbuilder John Whiticar. "Each one of our boats is really a handcrafted work of art."

Whiticar Boat Works has always operated as a family business. Addison Whiticar, a commercial fisherman, built the first hull for mackerel fishing. His son, Curt, developed the signature design with great head-sea capabilities.

"Whiticar boats were originally designed for our treacherous shallow inlets and stormy Gulf Stream waters off Florida's east coast. Original designs had a sharp entry for renowned head-sea ability and a low deadrise aft for shallow draft and improved speed," Whiticar says. "Our boats have evolved with more deadrise aft for less bottom twist, which improves handling and ride at today's higher speeds. Our boats have also gained in beam due to additional power and fuel requirements."

The company uses four layers of vacuum-bagged, solid-mahogany diagonal planking for the hull bottom. "Unlike most other custom builders that use plywood in their hulls, Whiticar has always used solid-mahogany planking," Whiticar says. "Using extra beefy stringers and a thicker, more solid hull makes our boats the toughest around. We may not always be the fastest in calm seas, but we're often in the front when the weather gets rough."

Although speed is always a consideration, ride quality takes top priority. "We are always conscious of weight but will not jeopardize structure or quality for speed. Our solid hull and light superstructure contribute to a low center of gravity and lower vertical accelerations, resulting in a smooth ride," Whiticar says.

As a fully custom builder, Whiticar is open to any project of any size, and the customer is always free to choose the layout, fishing features, salon styling and helm layout. "Each Whiticar is built and developed from the pedigree of those before it," Whiticar says. "Our hull design and styling has evolved from our proven earlier vessels. Look at any hull built today and the lines are all still a Whiticar."
