Silverton Marine

Over the last 39 years, Silverton Marine has built thousands of convertible-style yachts from the 30-foot range up to 50-footers. Most of these boats operated as cruisers, but some owners converted their vessels for more fish-friendly applications. Silverton, which prides itself on listening to its clients, decided to launch two convertibles in 2007 designed specifically for the offshore fisherman.

"We've been building convertibles for years, but we never really built a true sport-fish by definition," says Mike Usina, vice president of sales and marketing. "With our new 45- and 50-foot Tournament Series, we now offer a fully rigged convertible to fish competitively, whether it's in a tournament or running to the canyons."

The company made several aesthetic and functional changes to meet the needs of anglers. Silverton redesigned the hardtop for the T-Series to accommodate recessed teaser reels. The hardtop appears more like a traditional sport-fish than those used on the company's cruising models. Under the deck, the company added a cockpit sole plate for installing a fighting chair or leaning post. The company also placed a large livewell in the cockpit. Pompanette ladder-back helm chairs come as standard equipment on the bridge, while optional equipment includes a Rupp outrigger package, trolling valves and a fighting chair.

• Extended bridge overhang
• Underwater exhaust
• Optional outrigger packages
Silverton also drew upon some of the successful features used in its cruising models to make the sport-fish more functional. One such feature is the extended bridge overhang, which provides more shade for the crew working the lines in the cockpit. It also adds space to the bridge. The captain doesn't need to get up to allow passengers to pass by. "The layouts used in the cabin also reflect Silverton's cruising heritage," Usina says.

To compete in today's offshore market, speed is essential. Silverton used veteran naval architect Donald Blount to design the hull for optimal speed and strength. The 45T-Series comes with twin 720 hp Yanmars as standard equipment for a cruising speed of 30 knots. For the 50, Silverton offers twin MTU Series 60, 825 hp engines to get you out to the grounds at a 28-knot cruise. And, both boats feature underwater exhausts.
