Nordhavn Yachts

Some boatbuilders boast about the long-range capabilities of their vessels, but few of them use the phrase, "circumnavigate the globe." Nordhavn specializes in building self-sustained, expedition-style vessels equipped for cruising for extended voyages to remote parts of the world. "Over the past 20 years, more Nordhavns have circumnavigated the world and crossed major oceans than all other manufacturers' models combined," says Jim Leishman, co-owner and vice president of Pacific Asian Enterprises, the manufacturer of Nordhavn yachts.

For those looking to cruise on their own bottom to the Coral Sea or the South Pacific, Nordhavn provides several models to choose from. The 75 Extended-Range Yacht Fish is a ballasted displacement hull with a speed limitation of about 14 knots and a range of 4,000 miles. The boat carries 5,000 gallons of fuel and 600 gallons of water.

"In a Nordhavn, weight is a virtue, and construction scantlings, hardware and machinery are all extra-heavy," Leishman says. "This is an extremely well-equipped vessel with very large yacht systems, including full central hydraulics with stabilizing, bow and stern thrusters, and emergency bilge pumping. There's extensive sound engineering, chilled-water air conditioning and deep-freeze systems — all necessary for worldwide cruising and fishing." The tougher systems last longer and add to the vessels' resale, he says.

PAE launched its first Nordhavn in 1989 and has since splashed 400 boats ranging from 35 to 76 feet. "After 33 years of operation with the original founders still at the helm, the overriding theme is quality and value," says Leishman. Co-owner Jeff Leishman designs all Nordhavns in-house with a staff of naval architects and engineers.

 At a Glance:
•  Long-range capabilities
•  Sophisticated yacht systems
•  Advanced fuel systems
"The 75 Yacht Fish wasn't conceived as a tournament fisher but as a vessel that can safely and comfortably fish the most productive fishing grounds in the world," Leishman says.  "The fuel system in this vessel is the most sophisticated and versatile in the industry. All tanks are molded fiberglass, and removable baffle sections allow access to the entire tank interior. In short, it represents the finest in fuel storage and management for an offshore vessel."

The company will launch the first Yacht Fish model in 2008.
