I just recently returned from a whirlwind trip to our first Marlin University of 2010 in Costa Rica and a side trip to the Miami Boat Show. Although the fishing wasn't red-hot in Carrillo, we did manage to catch a billfish for every one of our 15 brand-new students. Most trips we have a couple of repeaters, but this session was full of newbies. Three or four of the fellows had never even been fishing before...for anything! I'm heading down to Costa Rica tomorrow for our Marlin University session, and I can't wait to see a billfish. I'm hearing that they are getting 15 to 20 bites a day down in Los SueƱos, which is about 60 miles or so by water from where we fish in Guanamar, near Playa Samarra. Guanamar is a quiet little spot next to a gorgeous palm-lined beach that looks like it's straight out of Robinson Crusoe. Better yet, a series of rocky ledges and outcroppings just offshore holds quite a few marlin as well, making it one of the best places to pursue light-tackle billfish records. Read More
