1. Marlin
accepts freelance-written articles on a query basis for both
features and departments. Please send written queries for any
articles you may have for Marlin with your name, address,
phone number, social security number and an SASE. Queries should be
concise and pertain to offishore fishing, destinations,
personalities and related topics only. For detailed information
regarding Marlin's scope, direction and editorial needs,
call editor Dave Ferrel at (407) 628-4802.
2. All features will be
edited as necessary, usually to a length of 1,500 to 2,500 words.
If an assigned article is unacceptable as submitted, the author may
be given one opportunity at a rewrite. If an article is accepted by
the editor, but is not used for reasons out of the author's
control, a one-third kill fee will be paid to author.
3. Marlin gladly
accepts ''over the transom'' submissions, but accepts no
responsibility for the return of such materials. In all cases,
though, the editors will attempt to respond to such materials in a
timely fashion.
4. Very often, one of
the key determining factors in our decision-making process
regarding submitted queries and manuscripts is the amount and
quality of available photography on the subject in question. See
the Photographer's Guidelines in the following section for more
information on this subject.
5. One of the easiest
ways to begin publishing your material in Marlin is by
contributing to the smaller departments:
-
Send short news items
which directly relate to offshore fishing, fishery regulations, the
boating industry or other related topics to the attention of ''Blue
Water Currents.'' Keep the items short and to the point, and
provide photography or illustration support when
possible.
-
The ''Tips &
Techniques'' section is the place for you to submit short briefs on
offshore fishing techniques, tackle innovations, boat handling
advice, etc. Keep the items under 250 words, and provide photo or
illustration support.
-
''Lines In'' is
Marlin's section for tournament reports. Call editor Dave
Ferrel at (407) 628-4802 to discuss possible event coverage. Keep
''over the transom'' reports short, make sure all names and boats
are spelled correctly, detail the ''Keys to Victory'' that led to
the winning catch, and provide a photo of the winners when
possible.
