Always looking for a way to improve upon old ideas, I came up with what I think is a better Dacron loop system for holding the line in the outrigger clip. To keep the line from chafing in the rigger clip and to find the same distance in the spread each time, I had for the past few years used a piece of Dacron spliced over the line with a loop attached to go in the rigger clip. The problem with this was that the length needed to make the loop was a bit long and had a tendency to hang up on things like guides and reel seats.
The new loop I came up with does the same job as the old one, without the dangling loop. It is easy to construct as well. Start with a piece of Dacron about 8 inches long. Match the weight of the Dacron with the weight of the mono (80-pound Dacron with 80-pound mono). Then take another piece of the Dacron a few inches shorter than the first and using a doubled-over piece of #2 or #3 wire, pull the shorter piece through the longer length from the middle to near the end. This shorter section will serve as the part that goes in the clip.
Stop the shorter piece about 2 inches from the end of the long one. Make a loop and pull the short piece back through the longer one in the opposite direction, stopping a few inches short of the end. Take waxed dental floss and whip the splices at the four points shown in the photo, then add a drop of Super Glue to each whip, to prevent raveling. Burn the remaining ends of the long piece of Dacron, then thread it on the mono line before the double line is tied. Once in position, whip the ends to keep it from sliding. Don't tie these whips too tight, so you can calibrate the placement later as fishing conditions change.
This system has proven to be very effective and is superior to just tying a wax thread loop, as it is fully adjustable.
